Bringing Sexy Back Part 2: Get in my Belly

Planning on losing weight during the holidays is like an oxymoron.

I see treats everywhere and I think, "get in my belly!"

So maybe my diet is not perfect yet...
By not perfect I mean, I've already gained back the initial five pounds I lost the week before Christmas.

I did manage to work out this holiday season, however.

I did it all with an audience too...now that they're home for Christmas break,  my twelve year old niece and five year old son have had the privilege of watching me attempt this living room madness.

Who doesn't want to be watched doing a ti-bo electric slide move by extended family??? This girl! Let's just say I confiscated all video/ still cameras and electronics prior to them entering the facility.

One day my five year old said, "mommy, you are really good at this!" and POOF! Cookies the Christmas elf managed to appear back on the shelf. It was crazy. He was all the way in the North Pole telling Santa about my son's bad behavior...

A different day, my son told me I looked pregnant again and I thought, "where's that damn elf?"

By the end of the workout he asked why my face was purple. I looked in the mirror. It was purple.

Sometimes when I talk to people about working out, I don't think they truly understand that it's difficult for me too. Maybe it's because I'm a stay at home mom. They are too busy focusing on the words, "stay at home" that they forget the job description ends with "mom."

Sure, I have a gym in my presently freezing garage, but give it a birthday, some holidays and a week forgetting to take out the recycling and suddenly it becomes a mosh pit for clutter, not to mention the stage for my husband's random spurts of creativity, which apparently leaves little time for putting away his razor blades, saws, sanders and the usual tools one uses for self expression??

There seem to be numerous obstacles throughout these workouts as well. Besides the fact that there are two human beings still in diapers in here, one who wants to eat every hour and the other who takes advantage of those eating frenzies to cause mischief, I also have two rather large boxers.

One day while doing burpee lunges, my dog farted in my mouth then looked at me like I was inconveniencing him.

That was not motivating at all.

Today, he ate something in the backyard and walked around puking all over the carpet!

After scrubbing it, I was exhausted.

I looked at my baby's sweet face and all I wanted to do was make myself a cup of tea and cuddle with my boys on the couch.

"It's only thirty minutes!" I told myself. I was also already in my workout clothes, which I put on as soon as I get out of bed (this really helps with my motivation- I know women who sleep in their workout clothes for early morning sessions as well). I also took the DVD to my son's bedroom since the living room was still wet from the puke. Again, NO EXCUSES!

Then there is the mental game.

We all struggle with this one. Sometimes I seriously lack an attention span.

Once, I noticed a chubby camera guy on the "Insanity" set get caught on film and I took a moment to contemplate about what his life was like when he got home from working all day on a fitness set.

Yes, I'm that weird

Did he still order a large pizza and liter of soda for one and make fun of the sweaty, ubber positivists? That's totally not a word.

Or was this the push he needed and he's actually stealing copies of the videos to take home for himself?

As usual, I was doing this bit of thinking while having a self-imposed water break, conveniently during the power jumps that my butt truly needs.

Lastly, I just learned that my ab separation may not heal on its own as I now also have a hernia. I guess this is pretty common after multiple pregnancies? Still, it's a major bummer for me. The doctor says it could heal on its own or I may be in need of surgery, but who has time to be out 6 weeks with kiddos? I am still on the fence about baby number four so I am going to hold out on the surgery.

In the mean time, I'm just listening to my body and skipping or modifying when it feels right.

In the kitchen, my husband and I are planning on going back to our usual diet of paleo-zone + chocolate (hehe) which is basically proteins, veggies, sweet potatoes, some rice and occasional dark chocolate. Preferably organic; you can't unlearn something you know to be true. Do some research on where your food comes from and you will be on board with me.

My husband, sadly, doesn't like veggies so he tends to blend up and drink Kale/Spinach, blueberries, coconut milk, and water. I also do this for convenience, but I try to make salads and steam veggies when I can.

I find having food prepared is helpful to curb moments of weakness. I use the crock pot a ton for pesto chicken or green chili stew with sweet potatoes and chicken (surprisingly delicious),  I like to bake salmon and I keep hard boiled eggs in the fridge for quick snacks. I've also started supplementing with one shakeology packet a day. This has been helping me keep my hunger at bay and give me more calories, which I currently need to keep a good milk supply for my four month old.

I also drink plenty of water. Today I forgot and 2 minutes into my workout my calves freaked out...big mistake.

I believe all things in moderation and I LOVE good food, so I don't like to think of this as a diet, but rather as a healthy lifestyle. In time I will have altered my taste buds and I once again will be craving this healthy food.

Stay motivated people!
